SLS/SLES – Worrisome Ingredients or Myth?

Fortunately a lot of information is available on the net for just about
anything one can think of. Unfortunately alot of information is inaccurate
and one must perform proper due diligence on matters of importance to verify
such information. In broad stroke terms let me state the following:

SLES and SLS have been used for many decades, worldwide in cosmetic/beauty
product preparations with full governmental approvals.

These ingredients can be irritants but no credible link has ever been shown
as carcinogens…….even irritation levels are achieved with much higher
concentrations, over extended periods and often after the test site has been
shaved (thereby allowing for better penetration and in many cases initiating
the irritation process merely by the process of shaving!)

Any product, in fact any ingredient known to man can be manipulated to
illustrate negative effects if one so desired………too much of anything
is no good and with many irritation tests extraordinary and unusual test
situations are created. I fail to see how shaving a rat, slathering a paste
of heavily concentrated SLS solution and leaving it there for hours on end
serves to prove that shampooing (on a non irritated or shaved head) for
several minutes at most, then thoroughy rinsing it off with a product that
is comprised of many ingredients, of which SLS is one, as being comparable!

I have provided 2 links for your review.

Ultimately you must decide on what you eat , do and put on your body and if
you determine that these ingredients are not suitable for you there are
alternatives available although it is estimated that over 90% of shampoos
currently continue to use these ingredients. I have used products with SLS
and SLES my entire life as have my family (and kids) and not only would we
not use these ingredients in manufacture but I wouldn’t use them personally
if I had the slightest concern regarding their safety.

Can you SEE or FEEL your Product work?

There is nothing like slick marketing to sell more product……..but that doesn’t make for a better or even for that matter, an effective product.

It has never failed to amaze me, at the simple yet often effective, deceptive ploys to sway a person’s mindset by relying on their sense of Sight and Feel. The common approach at many Trade Shows was/is to provide a generous dose of Scalp or Hair Treatment to a sensitive part of the body (ie. inside of the elbow) ; RUB it in and loudly proclaim…..”Can you see the redness? Can you feel the heat/itching? Well, you are feeling and seeing thye product at work!

Unfortunately, what you are most likely seeing and feeling are the skin(in a sensitive area) being irritated by chemical ingredients such as nicotinates or even “natural” ingredients like capsicum(or other hot pepper extracts), stinging nettle or other known irritants. The salesman will tell you how great it is to have this “Vasodilation” but you can attain the same dermal glow and increased blood flow by simply massaging the skin or scalp.

Let’s see……..an expensive chemical irritant or a free, natural and invigorating massage?!?!

Do not lose sight of the fact that , although massage is great to increase peripheral blood flow and is beneficial to getting nutrients to weak or starving follicles, this on its own does not address the underlying CAUSE of one’s hairloss.

It is good to know what to look for and how to interpret what you eventually see. Sometimes seeing(or feeling) is not believing!

Vitamins and Healthy Hair

What you do on the outside (your scalp and hair), helps to provide beautiful looking locks but any proper regimen should also include a well thought out and implemented diet, including supplements/vitamins.

It goes without saying that a proper diet rich in proteins and vitamins via varied sources including fish, meats and plenty of fresh produce will help you to achieve and maintain a healthy body and also be reflected in the quality and quantity of your hair. Multi vitamins (such as Centrum Extra) are fine but the consensus seems to be that extra C, D and B complex greatly enhance the desired results pertaining to preserving one’s hair and maximizing its healthy growth and appearance.

What’s Healthier-Short or Long Hair?

This is a very common question that we get and usually in conjunction with excessive hairloss. On its own, there should not be any reason to experience more hairloss if your hair is long rather than cut short……..except for the obvious. Longer hair is more prone to tangle and therefore get ripped out when washing, brushing or combing. Other than these self inflicted causes there is not any physiological benefit to wearing the hair shorter. It is important to note, that whether long or short, it is imperative to regularly and thoroughly clean the Hair and Scalp (using a double wash and rinse process).
